About Jeff Carter
During the past 20 years, Jeff Carter, founder and owner of The Westmount Group, has worked on projects in Connecticut, New York, Boston, Montreal, San Diego, The Philippines and Mexico. His furniture, which tends to play on the natural beauty of the materials and is designed based primarily on function, has been shipped to England, California, Calgary and throughout Connecticut. In 2004, Jeff was the project manager for a house that was named by the National Home Builders Association "The Best Spec House in Connecticut" between 2 and 3 million dollars.
Jeff began his career in the building industry at the young age of twelve when he took down a chicken coop to reuse the lumber for a small cliff-side house. His skills quickly brought him to the attention of craftsmen in Montreal with whom he began to work. While attending high school and throughout college, Jeff accepted commissions completing numerous artist studios, offices, stores and a few restaurants. With a desire to fully understand the structures that surround our lives, Jeff obtained a degree in Civil Engineering from Dawson Collage. He has since studied European Wood Carving with Nora Hall, Marquetry with Silas Koph, Chair Design with Robert Defucio and finishing techniques with Bob Flexner. In addition, Jeff has studied Kitchen and Lighting design with the National Kitchen & Bath Association, Design of Green Archicture with the outreach department of the Environmental Protection Agency, as well as completed numerous project management programs. Jeff is happy to bring the knowledge and skill acquired throughout the years to his work.
In 1987, Jeff moved to Bridgeport, CT to work on a multi-unit housing project. A short term job turned into a permanent home when he discovered Habitat For Humanity of Greater Bridgeport and met his wife, Julia. Soon after, Jeff opened the shop that currently houses The Westmount Group in the Remington Arms Factory. Since 1987, the team members of the Westmount Group have gathered in this shop to produce work for both private, public and corporate clients. In 2003, Jeff decided to focus his work on furniture and is currently running only a few projects throughout the year and focusing his remaining time in the shop developing new pieces of furniture and working directly with clients to create pieces that fit the owner's needs and style.
